COURSE DESCRIPTION
Current topics and issues in studio art. 6 hours activity. You may take this course more than once for a maximum of 12.0 units. This is an approved Writing Proficiency course; a grade of C- or better certifies writing proficiency for majors.
Prerequisites: ENGL 130 or JOUR 130 (or equivalent) with a grade of C- or higher; upper-division standing in Art or faculty permission.
COUSE OBJECTIVES
ARTS 495 Current Topics has two main objectives: 1) to give students experience in theme-based art production in a cross-disciplinary critique environment, and 2) to provide experience in the kinds of writing expected in professional art practices.
The first objective is satisfied through creative art-making projects within the theme of: Sequential and Serial Imagery. The second through the production of an artist’s resume, biography and statement displayed through your own personal web or blog site.

ASSIGNMENTS
Sequential Imagery:
- Cyanotype
- Hand-made Book
- Self-Defined Sequence
Serial Imagery:
- Group Serial Imagery Project
- Book (Hand-Made or Self Published)
- Self-Defined Sequence Serial Images
Web or Blog Site:
In today’s art world any emerging artist needs internet exposure. A web or blog site is a must. You will be creating one for this class. It should at a minimum include 8-10 images, contact info, a resume, artist’s statement and a brief biography. You may either design your own site or use existing templates.
Tumblr, Wix and Weebly are examples of free sites that host websites (I’m sure there are others too). WordPress is one of the many free blog hosts.

GRADES
Grades will be earned by acquiring points for your projects, web/blog site and your classroom participation. Poor attendance can also lessen your final grade or cause you to fail the course. A maximum of 200 points can be earned during the semester, with that total broken down in the following manner…
Sequential Imagery:
- Cyanotype – 10 points maximum
- Hand-made Book – 20 points maximum
- Self-Defined Sequence – 40 points maximum
Serial Imagery:
- Group Serial Imagery Project – 10 points maximum
- Book (Hand-Made or Self Published) – 20 points maximum
- Self-Defined Sequence Serial Images – 40 points maximum
Web or Blog Site: 40 points maximum
Classroom Participation: 20 points maximum
A = Flawless execution of both the aesthetic and technical components of the assignment. Exceptional demonstration of visual idea, including the ability to both challenge your viewers (intellectually and/or emotionally) while clearly communicating with them.
B = Constantly very good work throughout the project in both aesthetic and technical terms. This grade could reflect that parts of the project were outstanding but other parts were not preformed at this caliber. As such, in an assignment that requires five images, this grade it could mean that 4 of the 5 were “A” quality, but one piece was clearly inferior.
C = Satisfactory work across the board, but uninspired.Again in an assignment that requires four images, this grade it could mean that 3 of the 5 were A quality, but 2 pieces was clearly inferior.
D = Poor work, aesthetically and technically.
F = Unacceptable work.
Point Totals
200-190 = A

ATTENDANCE
All scheduled classes require attendance, with the exception of LAB or classes marked as INSTRUCTOR ABSENT. I will diligently take role on required days. Show up on time, remain awake and stay through the entire class and you will be credited for attending that day. Miss more than one critique (with an unexcused absence) and you’ll lose one full letter on your final grade for each occurrence. As stated above, failure to attend one of your assigned critiques will result in a loss of one full letter grade from your final grade. Missing two or more of your assigned critiques will amount to failure of this class.
For non-critique days show up on time and ready to participate in the listed topic. While you can use the classroom lab after the lecture, demo or discussion, do not expect to be able to use it during these activities.
PARTICIPATION
Up to 20 points (10% of your final grade) will be given, at the discretion of the professor, for classroom participation. Those who are active in class discussions and volunteer their opinions in critiques will receive the most participation points. If you do not voluntarily participate in discussions and simply wait to be called upon in critiques, you are likely to receive zero participation points.
Participation Point breakdown:
Active Participation: 18-20 points
Participates: 14-17 points
Occasional Participation: 8-13 points
Seldom Participates: 1-7 points
Never Participates: 0 points
