Serial Imagery

Serial=

1. of, relating to, consisting of or arranged in a series.

Serial imagery consists of related parts whose resonance helps build their meaning, but the images/objects need not be seen in a specific order.  Serial images rely on multiplicity to drive home their meaning and can generally be arranged in any sequence to create the same conclusion.

Serial images strive on consistencies while sequential imagery suggest change.

ASSIGNMENTS

Serial Imagery:

  • Collaborative Group Project – 10 points maximum = We’ll discuss and decide on a project in class. The class decided = draw, paint, sculpt, photograph, scan, xerox; 1 piece, 9″x12″ maximum size; render your art equipment, materials or studio.  Choose so that the object(s) you depict describes something about you (self-portrait through rendered artifacts).
  • Self Published or Hand-made Book – 20 points maximum = Imagery from any point in your career. Xerox pages, actual objects, prints for web pages all OK. Simple but effective binding is OK. Consider the serial nature of this work.
